His knees sing on the marble
step of flesh, as the subdeacon—
fiddle-backed grandeur
personified—lights another
pious soul in gaudy amber candle
glow.
Why can't I sing out to him my presence
here? Why can't he hear me? Why can't
these two actions mate with each other
and
create grand animal goodness?
The dissemination of
the Word from my lips
and the altered conception
in his pale open ear.
Some veiled women who kneel in dark-
ness curse, in orthodox expressions
I haven't begun to understand,
the expulsion.
Brown water follows him.
Blood and water and waste
are parted as the space-child
humanized makes his oracular
entrance, and my eyes
are put down,
embedded.
Expressionless
and without shoes,
I enter a crystal world
and a crystal time.
